Sports Management Mentorship Program 2025-2026

The McGill Sports Management Club Mentorship Program connects students with professionals across the sports business landscape, providing insight and expertise to students in a unique, one-on-one setting. The program is designed to extend beyond traditional understandings of “sports management,” supporting career development across a rapidly diversifying industry. The MSMC encourages students from diverse academic backgrounds to apply. Selected students are matched with an industry professional from one of the following areas: Sports Marketing/Communications, Operations/Logistics, Agency/Law, and Partnerships/Strategy.

The Program runs from November 1st to April 30th. Successful applicants will be paired with a Mentor and will work with them on a project throughout the year. The project will mirror the Mentor`s day-to-day responsibilities- the exact nature of the project will be decided between the Mentor and Mentee. Over the course of the program, Mentees will learn about the Mentor and their career as well as work on and receive feedback for their projects through monthly 30-min to 1hr meetings which may take place in person or online. The format of the projects vary based on the Mentor-Mentee pairing as they mirror the day-to-day responsibilities of the Mentor (past examples include research essays, shadowing reports, case studies, podcast episodes, etc).

Applications have closed for the 2025-2026 year. Thanks to everyone who applied!

FAQ

  • No, students from all faculties and academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply to the Mentorship Program.

  • We are looking for students who have a strong passion for sport- make sure this comes through in your application. Successful students are those who we see would clearly benefit from a connection with a mentor. Essentially, we want to see that we can help you achieve a career goal by providing a contact in the sports industry. Conversely, we are looking for dedicated students who are willing to put in the time and effort to make the partnership fulfilling for the Mentor.

  • MSMC Executives review your application materials- that is, the form and the interview- to gauge which Mentor would best suit your goals and interests. It is a careful process so as to make sure the partnership is beneficial both for the Mentor and the Mentee.

  • Although previous experience with sports managment does demonstrate a passion for the industry, we welcome applicants with or without experience in the field. The Mentorship Program is meant to provide a connection in sports management to help students start their career. Thus, it can be a great starting point for people who have no prior experience in sports management.

  • It is ok if you don`t know exactly which area of sports managment you want to pursue- that is what the Program is for! You can check off multiple areas on the application form or you can indicate a sport that you are especially interested in.

  • You get out of the Mentorship Program what you give. In other words, the amount of time and effort that you choose to invest will determine how much you benefit from the program. Executives on our team who previously participated in Mentorship indicate that they spent around 2 hours a week maximum working on their projects.
